About The Standing Spirit Project
 |
In the fall of 2003 Brad was approached by filmmaker Corby Petersen, after he heard Brad telling stories about his experiences with the Access Challenge, a hiking event for people living with disabilities staged by BCMOS. Corby saw an opportunity to do something creative involving nature, disability, and to blow people's minds. The two threw around the idea of the West Coast Trail, knowing how challenging an idea it was. After relating their experiences about previous trips on the trail, they arranged to connect and give further thought to their scheme. |
|
Corby tells the story of how the team got together:
It is really a story of word of mouth. You talk to enough people about your project, and they'll say "Hey, you should really meet so and so ... he/she can do such and such for you." That's where it starts. Brad or I will make contact with that person, and they'll definitely be inspired by the idea, but may or may not be able to contribute ... either they don't have the time, or their skills aren't suited to the project like we had hoped. It is a word of mouth campaign, and certainly we connected with a lot more people along the way than ultimately lent their skills to the project. I guess you just cast a wide net ... you may not have exactly what you need, but from there you'll likely have a prospect."

 | Finally, a crew of ten, almost all strangers to one another came together to make history, and a new set of friends in the process. They came together, compelled by a love of nature and a desire to do something incredible and life affirming.
