I am currently living in Toronto where I fight fraud working for the Interac Association in their Fraud Management Office (I’m still working on getting my tights and a cape). I grew up in Peterborough, Ontario where I spent a great deal of the time in the outdoors; canoe tripping, cottaging and camping. These experiences have ingrained in me the value and inherent beauty of nature and an understanding of the interconnectedness of the world around me. When I was 16 I began whitewater kayaking, and this sport has become a significant part of who I am today. I worked for many years as a raft guide and kayak instructor on the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers. I spent 3 years as the Head Instructor at the Madawaska Kanu Centre ( www.mkc.com ), a world-class whitewater kayak and canoe school on the Madawaska river, near Barry’s Bay, Ontario. Kayaking is a truly spiritual experience for me and I love nothing more then sharing this wonderful sport with others.
Along with whitewater kayaking, I have a terrible case of itchy feet that have lead me all over the world. I have traveled extensively in South America, Central America, the South Pacific, South East Asia, and Europe. I have kayaked on 4 continents and spent a year living and working in India and Bhutan. I believe that experiencing the diversity of human culture has provided me with a wonderful perspective on life and an appreciation for this incredible country I call home.
So how did I end-up joining this amazing group of individuals? I had the fortune of meeting Corby Petersen in high school where we became fast friends. Over the years we have ski tripped, canoe tripped, road tripped and more, so it seemed only natural that I would join him on his latest and greatest adventure, tackling the West Coast Trail with his good friend Brad. To me, the Standing Spirit Project embodies the realities of challenge and reward, where great effort is rewarded with great achievement. This project is the story of two friends who shared a dream and would not take no for an answer.
